Dear HIM fans
Dark Light: How HIM is More Gothic than Goth
This paper investigates the Goth subculture as being more medieval Gothic than nineteenth century in appearance and function. Focusing on a case study of the Goth band, HIM, I argue that while many of the visual aesthetics about the subculture are based firmly in the nineteenth century romantic, the Goth music industry is far more similar to the medieval Gothic culture. Contrasting the standard declaration of the true Gothic aesthetic ideal with the contemporary culture, one might find the dark lord of music a stark contrast, coveting darkness while thirteenth century Gothics coveted lightness. While medieval Churches were the cult centers, they were also the centers of worship, socialization and idea exchange; rock and roll of the modern era is the same. It crosses arbitrary governmental borders and language barriers, makes pilgrims out of ordinary citizens, and it gives people hope and sometimes even fear. Rock and roll has more in common with the true Gothic ideal. This paper looks at HIM's lyrics and visual representation as evidence of the medieval root of the Goth subculture.
Anyways, the reason I come to you guys for help is this: I need high quality scans of HIM's album artwork. I can find some things online, like the covers, but there's imagery inside the album booklets that I need. I have the albums, but I don't have access to a scanner in order to do so myself. Can anyone help me out here? I'll totally repay you with a ficlet or something of that manner?
Thanks,
Danielle
